ECO code: E76
King's Indian: Four Pawns Attack, 5...O-O 6.Nf3
This variation arises after the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f4 O-O 6. Nf3. White adopts the aggressive Four Pawns Attack setup, pushing a strong pawn center with pawns on d4, e4, c4, and f4.
Characteristic of 6.Nf3: This move develops a knight to a natural and flexible square, supporting the central pawns and preparing for kingside safety. It also helps White maintain control over the e5-square, which is crucial against Black’s typical counterplay.
Attacking or Defensive: White’s setup in this line is distinctly attacking, aiming to dominate the center and launch a kingside offensive. Black, having castled early with 5...O-O, is preparing for counterplay, often targeting White’s extended center with pawn breaks like ...e5 or ...c5, so Black’s stance is more counter-attacking or flexible.
Center Control: This opening variation is very much about attacking and controlling the center. White establishes a broad pawn center, which grants spatial advantage and attacking chances, while Black contests it dynamically.
