Catalan Opening: Open Defense

Moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 d5 4. Bg2 dxc4

This variation of the Catalan Opening is characterized by Black's early capture of the c4 pawn, known as the "Open Defense." By taking the pawn on c4, Black temporarily grabs material but must be prepared to defend against White's pressure on the center and queenside.

From White's perspective, this line is generally attacking. White aims to regain the pawn while exerting long-term pressure on Black's center and queenside, especially along the long diagonal with the fianchettoed bishop on g2. Black, on the other hand, adopts a somewhat defensive stance, trying to hold onto the extra pawn or neutralize White's initiative.

The opening definitely attacks the center—White's setup with d4 and c4 challenges Black's central presence, while Black's d5 move contests the center directly. The capture on c4 shifts the dynamic, but center control remains a key theme for both sides throughout the game.
