ECO code: D11
Slav: Slav-Reti System
Moves: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. g3 Bg4 5. Bg2 e6 6. O-O Nbd7
This variation of the Slav Defense incorporates ideas from the Reti opening, notably with White’s fianchetto of the kingside bishop on g2. The characteristic move here is White's 4. g3, preparing to develop the bishop to g2, which exerts long-term pressure along the long diagonal and supports central and queenside control.
From Black’s perspective, the move 4...Bg4 pins the knight on f3, aiming to exert pressure on White’s center and provoke weaknesses.
Characteristics: This system is somewhat flexible and positional. White adopts a solid, hypermodern setup, focusing on controlling the center from a distance rather than immediate occupation. Black maintains a classical Slav structure, solid and resilient.
Attacking or Defensive: White’s setup is primarily positional and flexible, leaning towards a strategic buildup rather than direct attack. Black’s play is solid and somewhat defensive but ready to counterattack the center or exploit pinning motifs.
Center Control: White does not immediately occupy the center with pawns but exerts influence via the fianchettoed bishop and knight. Black holds a strong pawn presence on d5 and c6, directly controlling central squares. Thus, both sides contest the center, but White emphasizes control over direct occupation.
