Blackmar-Diemer Gambit: Zeller Defense
Moves: 1. d4 d5 2. e4 dxe4 3. Nc3 Bf5
This variation of the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is characterized by Black developing the bishop early to f5 instead of the more common 3...Nf6 or 3...e5. The move 3...Bf5 aims to maintain active piece play and challenges White's typical plans by supporting the e4 pawn and preparing quick development.
From White's perspective, this opening remains attacking, as White sacrifices a pawn early to gain rapid development and open lines for an assault on Black's center and king position. Black's 3...Bf5 is somewhat defensive but also tries to keep control over the center by supporting the e4 pawn and developing actively.
Regarding the center, White's early e4 push and Nc3 development reflect an intention to attack the center aggressively, while Black tries to hold onto the extra pawn and develop pieces actively to counter White's pressure.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
