ECO code: C55
Two Knights: Modern, 5.e5 d5
This opening arises after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. e5 d5. Here, White aggressively pushes the e-pawn to e5, attacking Black’s knight on f6 and gaining space in the center. Black responds with the thematic counter-thrust 5...d5, challenging White’s central control and opening lines for development.
Characteristic: The move 5...d5 is a sharp and dynamic attempt by Black to contest the center immediately rather than retreating the knight or passively defending. It reflects Black’s intention to fight for equality by undermining White’s pawn chain and opening diagonals for the light-squared bishop.
Attacking or Defensive: From White’s perspective, this line is attacking, as White initiates central tension and space gain with e5. Black’s 5...d5 is also active and counter-attacking, aiming to destabilize White’s center and develop quickly rather than purely defending.
Center Control: This opening is strongly focused on the center. Both sides contest the central squares directly, with White initially pushing to gain space and Black responding with a central break to challenge and equalize.
