Italian Game: Rousseau Gambit
Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 f5
The Rousseau Gambit is an aggressive and somewhat rare variation of the Italian Game where Black immediately challenges White’s central control by offering a pawn with 3...f5. This move is characteristic for its bold attempt to open lines quickly and destabilize White’s center and kingside structure.
From Black’s perspective, this gambit is clearly attacking, aiming to seize the initiative early and create tactical chances. White, on the other hand, must decide whether to accept the gambit and try to hold the extra pawn or decline and maintain a solid center.
Regarding the center, the Rousseau Gambit is a direct challenge to White’s central presence. Although Black’s 3...f5 does not immediately occupy the center with pawns, it is an aggressive attempt to undermine White’s control of the center, especially targeting the e4 pawn and looking to open lines for an attack.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
