Four Knights: Scotch, 4...d6
The Four Knights Game is a classical opening characterized by the development of knights to natural squares early on. In this variation, after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. d4 d6, Black supports the e5 pawn solidly with the move 4...d6.
Characteristic of 4...d6: This move is somewhat defensive, aiming to strengthen Black's center and prepare for a stable, flexible position. It avoids immediate complications and keeps options open for piece development.
From White’s perspective, the move 4...d6 can be seen as slightly passive, providing White the chance to build up central control and space. White typically continues to press in the center and exploit the slight lack of activity from Black.
Both sides contest the center in this opening. White initiates central tension early with 4. d4, challenging Black’s e5 pawn. Black’s 4...d6 supports the center but does not directly challenge White’s central pawns, making the opening a balanced fight over central control with a slight edge in space and initiative for White.
