ECO code: C45
Scotch Game: Classical Variation
Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Bc5
Characteristic: The move 4...Bc5 is the hallmark of the Classical Variation in the Scotch Game. Black develops the bishop actively to c5, targeting White’s knight on d4 and exerting pressure on the central squares, especially aiming at the f2 pawn.
Attacking or Defensive: From Black’s perspective, this is an attacking move, seeking rapid piece development and counterplay. White, meanwhile, can also adopt an attacking posture by maintaining central control and preparing to challenge Black’s active bishop.
Center Control: This opening clearly attacks the center. Both sides contest central squares early on, with White occupying the center with pawns and knights, and Black putting pressure on these central points through piece activity.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
