Latvian Gambit
Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5
The Latvian Gambit is a bold and aggressive response by Black to White's King's Pawn opening. By playing 2...f5, Black immediately challenges White's center and aims to open lines quickly, much like a mirrored King's Gambit from Black's side.
Characteristic: The key characteristic of the Latvian Gambit is its aggressive pawn thrust 2...f5, which sacrifices a pawn early to gain rapid development and attacking chances. It is considered risky because it weakens Black's kingside and can lead to vulnerabilities if White responds accurately.
Attacking or Defensive: For Black, the Latvian Gambit is an attacking opening, aiming to seize the initiative right from the opening. White, on the other hand, can choose a more defensive or positional approach, exploiting Black’s early weaknesses while consolidating the center.
Center Control: This opening directly challenges the center. Black's 2...f5 is a provocative attempt to undermine White's control over the e4 square and gain counterplay in the center and kingside.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
