The Elephant Gambit arises after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d5 3. exd5. Here, Black immediately challenges White’s center with the pawn thrust 2...d5, offering a gambit pawn to gain rapid development and open lines for active piece play.
Characteristic: By playing 3.exd5, White accepts the pawn offered by Black, grabbing material and forcing Black to prove compensation through active piece play. This acceptance tests Black’s gambit idea directly.
Attacking or Defensive: From White’s perspective, this move is somewhat defensive since White captures the pawn and aims to hold onto extra material rather than immediately counterattacking. Black, on the other hand, adopts an attacking stance by offering the pawn to open lines and seize central control quickly.
Center Control: The Elephant Gambit is fundamentally about contesting the center at an early stage. Black’s 2...d5 challenges White’s e4 pawn directly, aiming for dynamic central play. After 3.exd5, Black will usually try to regain the pawn and maintain pressure in the center, so this opening is very much about fighting for central dominance.
