ECO code: C27
Bishop's Opening: Boden-Kieseritzky Gambit
Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bc4 Nxe4 4. Nc3
This gambit arises as an aggressive variation of the Bishop's Opening, where White immediately challenges Black's central pawn on e4 by developing the knight to c3 instead of defending passively. The characteristic of this move is that White sacrifices a pawn temporarily to gain rapid development and open lines for an attack.
From White's perspective, this is an attacking continuation aimed at seizing the initiative early. Black, having taken the e4 pawn, must be cautious to not fall behind in development.
Regarding the center, White indirectly contests it by putting pressure on Black's knight on e4 and preparing to reclaim central control, thus this opening does attack the center actively rather than ignoring it.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
