Center Game: von der Lasa Gambit
The von der Lasa Gambit arises after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. Bc4. Instead of immediately recapturing the pawn on d4 with the queen, White develops the bishop to c4, aiming to exert rapid pressure on Black's vulnerable f7 square.
Characteristic: This move is characterized by quick piece development and an early threat against Black’s kingside, prioritizing activity over immediate material recovery. It reflects an aggressive approach where White sacrifices the immediate pawn regain for swift initiative.
Attacking or Defensive: When playing as White, this gambit is decidedly attacking, seeking to unbalance Black and create tactical opportunities. Black, on the other hand, must respond carefully to avoid falling into traps or losing time, often adopting a more defensive posture initially.
Center Control: The opening directly challenges the center from the start. By playing d4 and then Bc4, White contests central squares and targets weaknesses around Black’s king. Although White temporarily sacrifices the pawn on d4, the gambit aims to regain control through active piece play rather than immediate pawn presence.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
