Portuguese Opening

ECO code: C20

1. e4 e5 2. Bb5

Portuguese Opening

Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Bb5

The Portuguese Opening is an uncommon early bishop development by White, where the bishop is placed on b5 immediately after 1.e4 e5. Unlike the Ruy Lopez, which also starts with Bb5 but after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3, this variation skips the knight development for a more direct bishop deployment.

Characteristic: The move 2.Bb5 aims to put immediate pressure on Black’s e5 pawn and may provoke weaknesses or inaccuracies in Black’s setup. It is a flexible move that can lead to various transpositions but is generally less popular than other mainline openings.

Nature of Play: From White’s perspective, this is an attacking move, as it challenges Black's central control early and prepares potential pressure on the center and kingside. Black should respond actively to maintain central control and develop harmoniously.

Central Control: The Portuguese Opening indirectly attacks the center by targeting the e5 pawn. Although it does not immediately occupy the center with a knight or pawn, it exerts pressure that can influence central tension and development.
