French Defense: Classical Variation

Moves: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e5 Nfd7 6. Bxe7 Qxe7

This variation of the French Defense is characterized by Black's early challenge to White's center with ...d5 and the development of the knight to f6, followed by White's aggressive advance e5, pushing Black's knight away. The Classical Variation features White pinning Black's knight on f6 with Bg5, aiming to exert pressure on Black's central and kingside structure.

Characteristics: The key idea in this line is White's space gain in the center with the pawn thrust e5, forcing Black's knight to retreat and slightly cramping Black's position. Black responds by exchanging the dark-squared bishop, which can help alleviate some of the pressure and prepare for counterplay.

Attacking or Defensive: As White, this variation is typically attacking, focusing on space and pressure in the center and kingside. Black's setup is more defensive initially, aiming to solidify the center and prepare counterattacks later, often targeting the d4 pawn and using timely breaks like ...c5.

Center Control: The opening intensely contests the center. White tries to dominate it with pawns on e5 and d4, while Black challenges this center with ...d5 and looks for counterplay against White's center. Thus, controlling and attacking the center is a fundamental theme in this variation.
