ECO code: C01
French Defense: Exchange Variation, 3...Qxd5
This line arises after the moves 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 Qxd5. Instead of recapturing the pawn with the knight or pawn, Black immediately takes back the pawn with the queen.
Characteristic: The early queen recapture aims to simplify the position quickly and challenge White's central control directly. However, bringing the queen out early can expose it to attacks, allowing White to gain tempo by developing pieces while chasing the queen.
Attacking or Defensive: From Black's perspective, this move is somewhat aggressive, as it actively contests the center and tries to equalize quickly. For White, it is more of an opportunity to develop rapidly and gain initiative by attacking the queen.
Center Control: This variation directly contests the center. Black's queen on d5 exerts influence on central squares, but White’s lead in development and potential to attack the queen often results in White maintaining a strong grip on the center.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
