French Defense: Steiner Variation

Moves: 1. e4 e6 2. c4

This variation arises when White responds to the French Defense's 1...e6 with an early c4 instead of the more common 2.d4. The move c4 aims to exert pressure on the d5 square, indirectly challenging Black’s central control without committing the d-pawn immediately.

Characteristics: The Steiner Variation is somewhat unorthodox and less explored compared to the mainline French Defense variations. By playing c4, White tries to build a strong central presence and limit Black’s typical ...d5 break. It also prepares to develop the queen’s bishop actively.

Strategic Nature: For White, this move is attacking in the sense that it seeks to challenge Black’s center early and gain spatial advantage. Black’s setup remains flexible and can adopt either defensive or counterattacking plans depending on how White proceeds.

Center Control: White’s c4 supports control of the center squares, particularly d5, and prepares for a possible d4 push later. Black will often try to counterattack the center with ...d5. Thus, the opening is fundamentally about contesting control of the center from the very start.
