The Modern Defense is characterized by Black’s hypermodern approach: instead of immediately contesting the center with pawns, Black allows White to occupy it early with pawns (e4 and f4) and aims to undermine and attack the center later with pieces and pawn breaks. The moves ...g6 and ...Bg7 fianchetto the bishop, putting pressure along the long diagonal.

From White’s perspective, this setup is generally attacking, as White has strong central control with pawns on e4 and f4, supported by the knight on f3. White looks to maintain and expand central space, often preparing for kingside attacks.

Black’s setup is more defensive and flexible, focusing on a solid but dynamic position. Black delays committing central pawns and waits for the right moment to challenge White’s center with moves like ...c5 or ...e5.

Regarding the center, White clearly takes the initiative by occupying and controlling it early on, while Black plans to attack the center indirectly and counterattack later rather than occupying it immediately.
