The Modern Defense is characterized by Black's hypermodern approach, where Black allows White to occupy the center early with pawns while focusing on controlling it from a distance. Instead of immediately challenging the center with pawns, Black fianchettoes the kingside bishop (via g6) and prepares a flexible pawn structure with d6.
From Black's perspective, this opening is generally defensive and aims to undermine White's center later. White, having established a strong pawn presence in the center with e4 and Nc3 supporting d4 (often played next), takes the attacking role by grabbing central space and trying to capitalize on Black's restraint.
The Modern Defense deliberately does not contest the center immediately with pawns but attacks it from the flanks, relying on piece pressure and pawn breaks in the mid to late opening. White usually tries to maintain and expand central control, while Black looks for counterplay by challenging White's center at the right moment.
