Scandinavian Defense: Richter Variation
Moves: 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. d4 Nxd5 4. Nf3 g6
This variation of the Scandinavian Defense is characterized by Black's early fianchetto with 4...g6, aiming to develop the bishop to the long diagonal and put pressure on the center from a distance. Instead of recapturing the pawn immediately or developing the bishop traditionally, Black prepares a solid and flexible setup that supports the knight on d5 and challenges White’s center.
From Black’s perspective, this line is more positional and defensive, focusing on controlling key squares and counterattacking opportunities rather than immediate direct confrontation. White, on the other hand, typically adopts a more attacking stance by occupying the center with pawns and pieces, aiming to leverage the spatial advantage.
Regarding the center, White clearly aims to attack and control the center with pawns on e4 and d4 and knight development, while Black uses the fianchettoed bishop and knight to challenge and undermine White’s central dominance indirectly rather than fighting for the center with pawns immediately.
