Scandinavian Defense: Gubinsky-Melts Defense
The Gubinsky-Melts Defense arises after the moves 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qd6. Instead of recapturing on d5 with the queen immediately after 3. Nc3, Black retreats the queen to d6.
Characteristic: This queen move to d6 is somewhat unusual and aims to support the center while avoiding early queen attacks by White’s pieces. It also prepares for a solid but flexible development and tries to maintain pressure on White's center.
Attacking or Defensive: From Black’s perspective, this line is more defensive and positional rather than aggressively attacking. Black seeks to develop comfortably and avoid losing time by chasing the queen. White, on the other hand, can use the lead in development to initiate pressure and control the center.
Center Control: The opening indirectly influences the center. Black challenges White’s pawn on e4 early but does not immediately occupy the center with pawns. White typically gains a central advantage due to better development and space.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
