Owen Defense
Moves: 1. e4 b6
FEN: rnbqkbnr/p1pppppp/1p6/8/4P3/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 2
The Owen Defense is characterized by Black’s early fianchetto of the queenside bishop with 1...b6. This move prepares to develop the bishop to b7, where it can exert pressure along the long diagonal. It is a somewhat unorthodox and flexible choice that aims to challenge White’s center from a distance rather than immediately contest it.
From Black’s perspective, the Owen Defense is generally considered a defensive and hypermodern approach. Instead of occupying the center directly with pawns, Black focuses on controlling key squares and counterattacking later. For White, the opening is typically attacking since White holds a strong pawn presence in the center after 1.e4.
Regarding center control, the Owen Defense does not immediately attack or occupy the center but instead aims to undermine White’s central control indirectly by applying pressure from the flanks, especially via the bishop on b7 once developed.
