Dutch Defense: Hopton Attack
Moves: 1. d4 f5 2. Bg5
The Hopton Attack is an uncommon and somewhat offbeat way for White to meet the Dutch Defense. By developing the bishop early to g5, White immediately pins Black’s knight on f6 (if it appears later) or exerts pressure on Black’s kingside, aiming to disrupt Black’s typical plan of solidifying control over the e4-square.
Characteristic: The early bishop move to g5 is somewhat provocative and aims to challenge Black’s setup before it fully develops. It is less about immediate central control and more about creating tactical and positional questions for Black, potentially weakening Black’s kingside structure if Black is not careful.
Attacking or Defensive: From White’s perspective, this is an attacking move that seeks to unsettle Black’s position early. Black remains largely in a defensive and reactive stance, trying to consolidate the f5 pawn and counter White’s pressure.
Center Control: This opening does not directly contest the center with pawns or pieces immediately; instead, it focuses on pressure against Black’s kingside and can indirectly influence the center by limiting Black’s typical ...e5 or ...d6 breaks in the Dutch.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
