Benko Gambit: Zaitsev, 5...axb5
The Benko Gambit arises after the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. cxb5 a6 5. Nc3 axb5. In this variation, Black accepts the pawn sacrifice on b5 to open lines on the queenside.
Characteristic of 5...axb5: This move recaptures the pawn on b5 and solidifies Black’s control of the a6–b5–c4 squares. It is a precise and flexible response, aiming to maintain pressure on White’s queenside while preparing for rapid development and counterplay.
Attacking or Defensive: From Black's perspective, this is an attacking move. Black sacrifices material for long-term positional pressure, especially along the a- and b-files. White, on the other hand, is generally considered to be playing more defensively or positionally, trying to consolidate the extra pawn while fending off Black’s initiative.
Center Control: The Benko Gambit is not primarily focused on direct central control. Instead, Black aims to undermine White’s center indirectly by exerting pressure on the queenside and threatening to open lines for their pieces. White usually holds a spatial advantage in the center but must be cautious of Black’s active piece play along the flanks.
