This line of the Budapest Gambit is named after the great grandmaster Akiba Rubinstein, who contributed to its theory. The characteristic move 5...Bb4+ is a check that develops the bishop actively while simultaneously putting pressure on White's position.

From Black's perspective, this is an attacking move aimed at disrupting White's smooth development and trying to gain rapid piece activity despite the pawn deficit. Black seeks counterplay rather than a purely defensive posture.

White, on the other hand, is generally focused on consolidating the extra pawn and developing harmoniously, so White's approach is more positional and defensive in nature, aiming to neutralize Black's initiative.

Regarding the center, the Budapest Gambit, including this line, is somewhat indirect in its approach to the center. Black challenges center control early with 2...e5 but quickly diverts into piece activity rather than occupying the center with pawns. The gambit aims to undermine White's center from the flanks and create tactical chances rather than a direct central occupation.
