Indian Defense: Budapest Defense
The Budapest Defense arises after the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5. This opening is characterized by Black's immediate challenge to White's central pawn on d4 with the somewhat surprising pawn push to e5. Unlike many Indian Defenses that focus on a solid and flexible setup, the Budapest Defense is more direct and tactical in nature.
Characteristic: Black sacrifices a pawn early on to gain rapid piece activity and open lines for counterplay. It is an aggressive and somewhat unorthodox attempt to unsettle White's control of the center.
Attacking or Defensive: From Black's perspective, this is an attacking choice aiming to seize the initiative quickly. White, on the other hand, typically plays more solidly to maintain the extra pawn and consolidate central control.
Center Control: The Budapest Defense contests the center immediately but does not establish a strong pawn presence there. Instead, Black aims to undermine White's center through piece play and tactical opportunities rather than classical central occupation.
