Mikenas Defense: Lithuanian Variation
Moves: 1. d4 Nc6 2. c4 e5 3. d5 Nce7
This variation of the Mikenas Defense features Black's early ...e5 challenging White's center directly, followed by the somewhat unusual retreat ...Nce7. The characteristic move 3...Nce7 aims to reposition the knight to support central and kingside squares while avoiding exchanges that would concede central control.
From Black's perspective, this line is somewhat hypermodern and defensive in nature, as Black allows White to gain space in the center with d5, planning to undermine it later. White, on the other hand, gains spatial advantage and a strong presence in the center early on.
The opening directly contests the center: White takes space with d5, while Black challenges it with ...e5 and the flexible knight maneuver. Overall, the Lithuanian Variation reflects a dynamic battle for central control with an emphasis on strategic maneuvering rather than immediate tactical confrontation.
