English Opening: Closed Variation
This opening arises after the moves: 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. g3 Nf6 4. Bg2 Bb4 5. Nd5. It is a variation of the English Opening where White adopts a slow, positional approach with fianchettoing the king's bishop, aiming for control over the long diagonal.
Characteristic of the Move 5. Nd5: The knight move to d5 is aggressive and somewhat unconventional here. It challenges Black's bishop on b4 and puts immediate pressure on Black's position by threatening to exchange off an important defender and influence the center. This move can disrupt Black’s normal development and provoke weaknesses.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, this variation is generally attacking in nature, seeking to gain space and initiate pressure on Black’s setup early. Black’s setup is more defensive and flexible, aiming to counter-attack at the right moment.
Control of the Center: While the English Opening is often considered a flank opening, this variation does indirectly contest the center. The knight on d5 exerts influence over central squares, and White’s strategy involves putting pressure on key central points rather than occupying them outright.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
