English Opening: Carls-Bremen System

Moves: 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3

This variation of the English Opening features an early kingside fianchetto with 3. g3, aiming to control the long diagonal and support central and queenside influence. The move g3 is characteristic of a flexible, positional approach, preparing to develop the bishop to Bg2 and exert pressure on the central dark squares.

From White's perspective, this setup is generally more strategic and positional than immediately attacking, focusing on solid control and long-term pressure rather than direct confrontation. Black's setup with ...e5 and ...Nf6 contests the center actively, so White aims to counterbalance this by influencing the center indirectly.

Regarding the center, White does not occupy it immediately with pawns but applies indirect pressure on the center through piece play and the fianchettoed bishop. This allows White to challenge Black's central presence later on under favorable circumstances.
