English Opening: Anglo-Indian Defense, Anglo-Grünfeld Variation
This variation arises after the moves 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. cxd5 Nxd5 4. Nf3. Here, Black challenges White's control of the center early by striking with ...d5 and recapturing on d5 with the knight, aiming to equalize space and activity.
Characteristic: The Anglo-Grünfeld is characterized by Black's flexible and dynamic approach to central tension, often leading to positions reminiscent of the Grünfeld Defense but with the c4 move inserted by White. White’s 4. Nf3 develops naturally while keeping options open for central expansion.
Attacking or Defensive: From White's perspective, the move 4. Nf3 is primarily developmental and prepares for central control and kingside safety; it is neither overtly attacking nor purely defensive. Black’s setup, however, is somewhat aggressive, putting immediate pressure on White’s center and aiming for active piece play.
Center Control: This opening features a contest for the center. Black challenges White’s influence in the center early on, and White must decide how to maintain or regain central space. Thus, the opening certainly involves an active struggle over the center rather than avoiding it.
