Characteristic of the move 4...c6: This move supports Black's central pawn on d5, preparing to maintain a strong pawn chain and potentially enabling ...dxc4 under favorable circumstances. It also keeps options open for developing the queenside knight to d7 and provides a sturdy defensive foundation.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, the Neo-Catalan is generally an attacking and positional approach, aiming to control the long diagonal with the fianchettoed bishop and exert pressure on Black's center. Black's move 4...c6 is more defensive and solid, focusing on maintaining a strong foothold in the center and avoiding early weaknesses.
