This variation of the English Opening features Black playing an early ...c6 move, supporting the central ...d5 pawn and preparing a solid pawn structure. The move ...c6 is characteristic for reinforcing control over the d5-square and enabling Black to maintain a strong foothold in the center, often leading to a Caro-Kann type pawn structure if ...c5 is played later.
From Black's perspective, the setup is primarily defensive and solid, focusing on controlling the center with pawns rather than immediate attacks. White's fianchetto with g3 and Nf3 aims to control the long diagonal and prepare for central or queenside expansion, so White maintains flexibility in whether to challenge the center directly or build pressure from the wings.
