Reti: Advance, Anglo-Polish Attack

Moves: 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 d4 3. b4

This opening variation arises from the Reti Opening, where White challenges Black's advanced pawn on d4 with an immediate flank pawn push, b4. The characteristic feature of this move is its intent to undermine Black's pawn chain on the queenside, specifically targeting the d4 pawn indirectly and aiming to gain space on the queenside.

From White's perspective, this is an attacking and somewhat unorthodox attempt to destabilize Black's central control by pressuring the base of Black's pawn chain. Black, on the other hand, must decide whether to maintain the advanced pawn or to counterattack on the queenside or center.

Although White does not directly occupy the center with pawns in this line, the opening indirectly contests central control by putting pressure on Black's advanced d4 pawn, which is a key central foothold. Thus, while not a direct central occupation, it is an active attempt to challenge Black's center from the flank.
