Reti: KIA (King's Indian Attack)
The Reti Opening with the King's Indian Attack setup arises after the moves 1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 Nc6. This flexible and hypermodern opening focuses on controlling the center from a distance rather than occupying it immediately with pawns.
Characteristic: The move 2. g3 is characteristic of the King's Indian Attack formation, where White fianchettoes the kingside bishop to g2. This setup aims to exert long-term pressure on the central and queenside squares while maintaining solid king safety.
Attacking or Defensive: As White, this opening is generally considered a strategic, somewhat positional approach rather than an outright attacking or purely defensive system. It allows White to build up pressure gradually. Black’s move 2...Nc6 develops a piece and supports central control, gearing for a balanced fight.
Center Control: White does not immediately occupy the center with pawns but instead controls it indirectly with pieces and fianchettoed bishop. Black, meanwhile, occupies the center directly with pawns on d5 and piece development, leading to a contest over central influence.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
