ECO code: A07
Reti Opening: King's Indian Attack, Yugoslav Variation
Moves: 1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 c6 3. Bg2 Bg4
This variation arises from the flexible and hypermodern Reti Opening, where White fianchettoes the kingside bishop early with g3 and Bg2. Black responds actively with c6 and pins White’s knight by developing the bishop to g4.
Characteristic of the move 3...Bg4: Black's bishop pin aims to exert pressure on White’s knight on f3, which is a key defender of the central squares. This move is somewhat provocative, encouraging White to decide whether to break the pin or accept it, potentially gaining tempo for Black.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, this setup is primarily positional and flexible, focusing on solid development and controlling key squares rather than immediate attack. Black's Bg4 move takes a more active stance, putting pressure on White’s position and can be seen as an attacking or at least aggressive developing move.
Center Control: White adopts a hypermodern approach, not occupying the center immediately but aiming to control it from a distance with pieces and fianchettoed bishop. Black stakes a claim in the center with pawns on d5 and c6, challenging White’s influence.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
