ECO code: A04
Reti Opening: 1...e6
The Reti Opening begins with 1. Nf3, aiming for flexible development and control of the center from a distance. Black's response 1...e6 is a solid and flexible move, preparing to support central pawn advances such as ...d5 or ...c5 later. White continues with 2. g3, intending to fianchetto the bishop on g2, reinforcing control over the long diagonal and central squares.
Characteristic of 1...e6: This move is known for its versatility and solidity. It does not immediately challenge White's center but prepares a strong and flexible pawn structure. It can transpose into French Defense setups if Black later plays ...d5.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, this setup is generally considered positional and somewhat defensive, focusing on controlling the center indirectly rather than immediate confrontation. Black's 1...e6 is also solid and somewhat defensive, aiming for a strong pawn structure and counterattack opportunities later.
Center Control: Neither side attacks the center immediately with pawns in the first two moves. Instead, White exerts pressure on the center from the flanks, while Black prepares to challenge the center more directly in subsequent moves.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
