Reti Opening: 1...c5
The Reti Opening with the move 1...c5 (after 1. Nf3 c5 2. g3 Nc6 3. Bg2) is a hypermodern approach where Black immediately challenges White's control of the center from the flank. Instead of occupying the center with pawns, Black aims to exert pressure on d4 and influence central squares indirectly.
Characteristic: The move 1...c5 is characteristic of a counter-attacking style, aiming to undermine White's central presence and gain active piece play. It often leads to flexible pawn structures and dynamic play.
Attacking or Defensive: From White’s perspective, the setup with Nf3 and g3 is more positional and flexible, focusing on controlling the center with pieces rather than occupying it immediately. Black's 1...c5 is slightly more aggressive, challenging White's central influence early on. Thus, Black’s play can be considered more attacking in this line, while White maintains a solid, somewhat defensive stance, waiting to strike in the center.
Center Control: This opening does not involve an immediate direct occupation of the center by White’s pawns. Instead, it emphasizes controlling the center with pieces (knight and bishop) and allows Black to counterattack the center from the flank. So, while White does not attack the center with pawns early, both sides focus on central control through piece play.
