Van Geet Opening: Battambang Variation
The Van Geet Opening begins with 1.a3, an uncommon and somewhat offbeat first move for White. The Battambang Variation continues with 2.Nc3 after Black responds with 1...e5.
Characteristic: The move 1.a3 is a flexible waiting move that prevents Black's pieces, especially the bishop or knight, from occupying the b4 square. It does not immediately contest the center but prepares for a variety of setups. The follow-up 2.Nc3 develops a knight towards the center, aiming to influence central squares indirectly.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, this opening is more positional and less aggressive than traditional center-focused openings. It is neither strongly attacking nor purely defensive but aims for a flexible, somewhat cautious buildup. Black, having played 1...e5, stakes a claim in the center early and can adopt an attacking posture.
Center Control: White does not directly challenge the center on the first move but begins to develop pieces that support central control. Black's early ...e5 move is a direct claim of the center. Overall, White’s approach is more about preparation and flexibility than immediate central confrontation.
