ECO code: A00
Polish Opening: 1...e5 2.Bb2
The Polish Opening begins with 1.b4, immediately challenging the queenside and aiming to control the important c5 square. After Black replies 1...e5, White develops the bishop to b2 on move 2, exerting strong pressure along the long diagonal towards Black’s center and kingside.
Characteristic: The move 2.Bb2 is characteristic for fianchettoing the bishop early to influence the central and diagonal squares from a distance. This setup supports White’s flank expansion while indirectly targeting Black’s central pawn on e5.
Attacking or Defensive: For White, this opening is primarily attacking in nature, focusing on controlling key squares and undermining Black’s central presence. Black’s 1...e5 strike is also an attacking move aiming to seize central space immediately.
Center Control: While White does not occupy the center directly with pawns early on, the bishop on b2 applies pressure on central squares, thus White’s strategy involves indirect central influence rather than direct occupation. Black, on the other hand, claims the center more conventionally with the pawn on e5.
