ECO code: A00
Polish Opening: 1...e5
The Polish Opening begins with 1.b4, an uncommon flank pawn move by White aimed at controlling the queenside and preparing to fianchetto the bishop or gain space on the b-file. Black's immediate response with 1...e5 strikes at the center, challenging White's control and opening lines for rapid development.
Characteristic: Black's 1...e5 is a direct and classical response to White's flank start, aiming to establish a strong presence in the center and take advantage of White's less conventional first move.
Attacking or Defensive: From White's perspective, 1.b4 is an attacking, somewhat hypermodern approach trying to undermine Black's center from the flank later on. Black's reply 1...e5 is an active, attacking move contesting the center immediately.
Center Control: Black clearly targets the center with 1...e5, while White initially refrains from direct central occupation, opting instead for flank pressure.
