ECO code: A00
Grob Opening: 1...d5 2.h3 e5
The Grob Opening begins with the uncommon and provocative move 1.g4. Black responds actively with 1...d5, immediately challenging White's control of the center. White then plays 2.h3, a somewhat unusual supporting move aimed at preventing Black's pieces from easily occupying the g4-square or harassing the g4-pawn, but it does little to contest central control. Black continues with 2...e5, further occupying the center and seizing the initiative.
Characteristic: This line is characterized by White's flank pawn advances, which are unconventional and create weaknesses on the kingside early on. Black responds by establishing a strong pawn presence in the center.
Attacking or Defensive: White’s moves are somewhat defensive or preparatory in nature, aiming to support the advanced g4-pawn but not directly challenging Black's center. Black, on the other hand, plays aggressively by grabbing central space and opening lines for rapid development.
Center Control: This opening clearly results in Black taking strong control of the center through the moves ...d5 and ...e5, while White largely neglects central influence in favor of flank activity.
This opening is defined by the position shown on the board below. The moves displayed are a typical sequence that leads to it, but different sequences can reach the same position and still carry the same opening name.
